چکیده

Abstract The effects of pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) can be devastating, so understanding their internal dynamics and evolution is important for hazard assessment. We use damaged trees located around Mount St. Helens (USA) as proxy the dynamic pressure ( P dyn ) PDC erupted on 18 May 1980. recorded location, distribution, foliage preservation within medial distal parts devastated forest. Sub-meter resolution aerial photographs from a month after eruption allow distinction between standing that retained those were stripped. Heights estimated measured lengths shadows. number was counted defined areas along propagation paths PDCs. From tree heights, we toppling stresses . Overall, head to portions blowdown zone ranged 10 35 kPa. likely waned with distance, shown by increased in outer area. Ground - coupled acoustic airwaves from Mount St . Helens provide constraints on the May 18 , 1980 eruption

The May 18, 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption perturbed the atmosphere and generated atmosphere-to-ground coupled airwaves, which were recorded on at least 35 seismometers operated by the Pacific Northwest Seismograph Network (PNSN). From 102 distinct travel time picks we identify coherent airwaves crossing Washington State primarily to the north and east of the volcano. The travel time curves pro...

The mount st. Helens volcanic eruption of 18 may 1980: large short-term surface temperature effects.

The surface temperature effects of the 18 May 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens Volcano were examinedfor 1 day immediately after the eruption; 24-hour temperature differences and Model Output Statistics errors as well as the detailed temporal evolution of surface temperature at selected stations were used. During the daytime hours immediately after the eruption, the temperature was suppressed b...

The mount st. Helens volcanic eruption of 18 may 1980: minimal climatic effect.

An energy-balance numerical climate model was used to simulate the effects of the Mount St. Helens volcanic eruption of 18 May 1980. The resulting surface temperature depression is a maximum of 0.1 degrees C in the winter in the polar region, but is an order of magnitude smaller than the observed natural variability from other effects and will therefore be undetectable.

Erosional Furrows Formed During the Lateral Blast at Mount St. Helens, May 18, 1980

Nearly horizontal, quasi-periodic erosional features of 7-m average transverse wavelength and of order 100-m length occur in scattered locations from 3.5 to 9 km from the crater at Mount St. Helens under deposits of the lateral blast of May 18, 1980. We attribute the erosional features to scouring by longitudinal vortices resulting from flow instabilities induced by complex topography, namely, ...

A seismically constrained mass discharge rate for the initiation of the May 18, 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption

We calculate the vertical mass discharge rate from Mount St. Helens for the first few minutes of the May 18, 1980 cataclysmic eruption using a new method based on seismic constraints. The observed seismic waves indicate that the seismic source is a series of single forces. We model these forces as thrusts due to a combination of the momentum flux of the erupted products and the pressure of the ...
